11.5 Thing Eleven and a half

For the most part I enjoyed these exercises. I really enjoyed the screen cast. The virtual world was one of the places I was not sure about. I learn so much by taking on the applications that I would otherwise not be exposed. I am concerned on all of the downloading that I had to do. Space and speed is so important with the the school computer I hope I do not have to reimage. The hours I really do not need or really care about but this took me way more time than last years. Thank yall for the chance to learn and see new and exciting applications

11.5 Thing Nine

If a student did not have access to Powerpoint then using another application to be able to make a presentation would be very benificial and helps make the playing field more even in the classroom. I consitently have students come in and say they have saved something at home and it will not open in their teachers room and they will now get a bad grade because it will be late. I just ask for the copy and figure a way out and normaly print a hard copy and then email the teacher as well. If I can not figure it out all I have to do is ask the class and someone knows how. I think that is what the 11.5 is trying to show teachers. There is so much out there we still need to learn. Other teachers/students and our librarian are all great resources. Yes other applications that can basically do what powerpoint can do plus is accessible to all is a good thing.

11.5 Thing Eight

I attempted several downloads. Jing was the first out of three I got to work. I have uploaded it to Jings site and have a saved copy on my desktop. But Error messages come up when I try to upload to my blog. This would be great for students to be able to email me with computer questions and then I could create a quick tutorial I will continue to try to get it to work but right now I have three downloads on this THING alone. I am worried when I head back to class my computer will not have enough memory to handle all of the softwares I already have for the class.

11.5 Thing Seven

Tutorial video are used all the times in my classroom. I have a large learning curve in my class. Some students are very verse in using a computer. Others are literally turning them on for the first time. I have had students who wanted to be challenged at a higher level so i found tutorial that can teach them how to use software such as Photoshop. These student are not bored because they do not feel they are wasting their time. I found some great videos on HULU which I have used before. I am also involved in athletics and we are always dealing with film clips of students competing for scholarships. It seems that every college needs film yesterday. The software company we use have tutorials for coaches and I let the athletes watch the film and then they can help me break down there film.
I was asked about tutorials here is one from

11.5 Thing Six

Itouch/Apps can be used in many ways in a group setting. Just like we share computers we can share these devices. I have been in this type of a setting for many years and with all things there would be certain things we would need to monitor. As far as applications that could be downloaded Itouch is basically a small computer. We have in place now guide lines so I do not see any differences. Keeping students on task will always be a big concern. The network we are building will be so useful. In this exercise I was confused on what was really being looked for, so I sent a message out for help and got a response back that helped me greatly. Thanks Vaughn

11.5 Thing Five

All three of my children have been on Facebook for years and I have become use to them refering to their use of facebook. I have seen pictures they have uploaded to their sites as well as pictures their friends have uploaded. My daughter has been able to maintain friendships with friends from high school because Facebook makes it so easy for them to stay in contact with each other. While viewing the different links on Twitter I have seen that Twitter is a little more basic than facebook. Users can basically post very short notes that can let followers know status updates.
Both sites are useful resources for students in and outside of the classroom. Using Facebook, a teacher/instructor could create a group for a specific class and have all their students join. Within a group you can post assignments, calanders, video lectures, and there is a discussion board. This could be used by students during class to view instructions and complete assignments. It could be used outside of the classroom as a place for students to resort back to. If they miss class they would be able to complete missed work and view a calander to know about upcoming class events. Also, the discussion board could be used by students and teachers to ask/clairfy questions. Twitter could be used a quick way to update homework, remind students of tests, clairfy study materials, and clairfy questions. It would be a quicker way for students to be able to refer back to a class and get information they need.
Back-channeling in class could be useful for lectures and for answering/clairfying questions. I think back-channeling would be a great tool to use to see if students understand the material. They could use Twitter to update answers to questions or respond to discussions and the teacher would have all the student's responses right there. It would also benefit students who have difficulty speaking infront of a class because they could use back-channeling to inform the teacher of their contribution to the class discussion.

11.5 Thing Four

It would be a great advantage to be able to film a lesson and posting it where students who might be ill or at an alternative education site to view and would be able to stay with the class and it would involve very little extra work of the teacher.
As far as student or for that matter anyone who can upload a lesson would be a great advantage. The way others might complete a assignment and the way that I think is best may not be always the same. I like to learn from others and then use there style to help me with alternative instructions.

11.5 Thing Three

I guess I am very fortunate because I work in the CATE department. I have access to facebook in the class room for IMing, I have VISION which allows me to look at and converse with the students while they work on assignments. The SKYPE would be interesting to use with other teacher but I am just worried about the effects on the network. Our tech guys express concerns over streaming music. As usual you would need to monitor the students but now a days that goes without saying.

11.5 Thing One

I believe that the librarian play the role and the organizer. The role of the teacher will be to assist the student with his gathering of information off the Internet. The student will get the benefits of having the Internet as its teacher.
